Using AVL/GPS to Optimize Snowplowing

Increasingly, local agencies are using new technologies to improve operations. One such example is Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL), which uses GPS to collect data (telematics) that geographically locates and tracks vehicles and equipment in real time. Telematics provides key data points aligned with performance objectives that allow for continuous optimization of key operations for improved service and safety.

This guide offers insight on using AVL to optimize snowplowing. It includes information on how some local agencies in Minnesota are using the technology and the benefits they are seeing. It also discusses cost and AVL vendors.
