The National Association of County Engineers awarded its 2018 Rural Engineer of the Year Award to John Brunkhorst, McLeod County Engineer and LRRB Research Implementation Committee Member. Brunkhorst was recognized in April at the NACE convention for many accomplishments, including completion of a new southwest bypass around the City of Hutchinson; presenting winter maintenance safety education talks to local preschools; and pioneering a number of “firsts,” such as the first project in the state to require “safety edge” formed in fresh concrete. He also is responsible for replacing 46 deficient bridges, reconstructing 25 miles of highways, rehabilitating 92 miles of highways and constructing two roundabouts.
