To reduce highway fatalities after dark, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) mandated a new minimum standard for pavement marking retroreflectivity effective September 6, 2022. The rule requires state and local agencies or officials to implement a method within four years for maintaining pavement marking retroreflectivity at or above minimum levels.
In a new LRRB study, researchers are reviewing and summarizing the requirements, dates and procedures, and will communicate them to local agencies throughout Minnesota.
